BENNETT CENTRE FIRE

A fire broke out at the Bennett Centre shortly before noon today. The Edmonton Fire Service suspects that a gas leak sparked the blaze. The fire was contained to the North East annex which contains the buildings cafeteria and residence classrooms. Four people were in the building when the fire began and they are all safe. In addition, 17 students participating in an art workshop this week at the centre were away on a field trip with their supervisors.

Bennett School originally opened in 1912 and subsequently closed in 1973. In 1981, the Edmonton Public School Board reopened the school as Bennett Environmental Education Centre in commemoration of Alberta's 75th Anniversary. The residence wing was added to the existing 1912 building as a co-operative project between the Edmonton Public School District and the Edmonton Municipal 75th Anniversary Committee.

Students, teachers and parents from across Alberta visit the Bennett Centre to participate in overnight school programs, day programs, environmental lessons and outdoor activities.

The parents of the students participating in the art workshop have been contacted and will be picking their children up at the Centre for Education, located at One Kingsway at 2:30 p.m.
