AGREEMENT CEREMONY IN CELEBRATION OF CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE

On Thursday, March 20 at 8:30 a.m., Edmonton Public Schools and the Communications University of China (CUC) will sign an agreement that deals with the operations of the Confucius Institute in Edmonton. The signing will take place in McCauley Chambers at the Centre for Education, One Kingsway.

The agreement will be signed by the Vice President of CUC, Dr. Hu and Superintendent of Schools, Edgar Schmidt. Accompanying Dr. Hu are some of the most senior professors in China in the field of Chinese language and literature and Chinese language pedagogy.

In addition to the formal signing, the professors from CUC will be giving lectures to the Chinese language teachers in the District during an all day P.D. session at the Centre for Education.

The Superintendent and Board Chair also signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute in Edmonton (CIE) with high ranking officials from the Chinese Ministry of Education in Beijing in December 2007.

The CIE has been established in collaboration with the Shandong Education Commission and the Communication University of China, under the authorization and sponsorship of China’s National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (HANBAN). It is part of a global network of more than 120 Confucius Institutes in 50 countries, each of which is dedicated to the promotion and development of Chinese language education and cultural and business exchange with China.
