ATA LOCAL AND DISTRICT SIGN MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT

The Edmonton Public Teachers Local of the ATA and Edmonton Public Schools have signed a five year Memorandum of Agreement. The agreement, which extends from September 1, 2007 to August 31, 2012, will be sent to the Local membership for ratification on January 14, 2008 at the Shaw Conference Centre and by the Edmonton Public Schools Board of Trustees on January 15, 2008.

The agreement calls for a three per cent salary increase for teachers effective September 1, 2007. On September 1 of each subsequent year of the agreement, teachers will receive salary increases in line with the Average Weekly Wage Earnings Index. These increases align with the Provincial Pension Plan Memorandum of Agreement reached between the Alberta Teachers' Association and the Government of Alberta.

"We're very pleased to have reached this Memorandum of Agreement," says Board Chair Bev Esslinger. "We look forward to the outcome of the ratification vote by the Local membership."

Edmonton Public Teachers' Local President Mark Ramsankar was also pleased a Memorandum of Agreement had been reached. "Our teachers will have the opportunity to vote on this memorandum. January 14th could be a historic day for both our Local and our District. I am glad we have reached this point."

Edmonton Public Schools is the second largest school district in Alberta with 197 schools, more than 79,000 students and more than 10,000 employees.
