Gandhi Youth Conference At Ross Sheppard
Ross Sheppard School is hosting its annual Gandhi Youth Conference on Friday, October 6 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The theme of this year's conference, Gandhi Peace Week: i and u, is designed to introduce youth to the ideals of peace and non-violence and assist them in taking responsibility for working towards peace. The entire student body of Ross Sheppard will be attending the conference as well as 120 students from other schools from around Edmonton.
The students will attend a school-wide assembly at 9 a.m. and then participate in their choice of morning breakout sessions. The themes of this conference complement the Social Studies 20 and 30 Curriculum of Alberta. Guest speakers include the keynote speaker, Dr. Bruce Miller; Gene Zwozdesky, Minister of Education; and Lyall Thomson, Superintendent of Schools. Also attending are representatives from the Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace.
In addition to workshops, there will be traditional Indian dancing, a vegetarian Indian buffet lunch and an intercultural themed play.
The Gandhi Youth Conference is part of Ross Sheppard's Project R.E.D. (Rejecting Racism, Embracing Equality and Demanding Diversity). This year, the school is adding Practicing Peace to this initiative. Project R.E.D. is in its third year as a collaborative action research study with the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta.
